چکیده

This study tested for cross-sectional dependencies between carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and per capita gross domestic product (GDP) among countries in four regions: Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. When cross-sectional correlations are identified in a group of countries, panel data regression with common factors proposed by Pesaran (2006) is used to determine whether the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is supported for CO2 emissions in the respective regions. The empirical results show that a cross-sectional dependency is only absent among African countries and that crosssectional dependencies are significant among the countries in Europe, Asia, and America. The primary factors responsible for such crosssectional correlations are regional carbon leakage and GDP growth. ∗Corresponding author: Chien-Ho Wang, Department of Economics, National Taipei University, 3F36 Social Science Building, 151 University Road, San Shia, Taipei county, 237, Taiwan ROC, Email [email protected]. †Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica, 115 NanKang Taipei Taiwan ROC, Email: [email protected]. ‡Department of Economics, Chinese Culture University, 55, Hwa-Kang Road , 111 Taipei Taiwan ROC, Email [email protected]. §Department of Economics, National Taipei University, 3F36 Social Science Building, 151 University Road, San Shia, Taipei county, 237, Taiwan ROC, Email: [email protected].

رابطه رشد اقتصادی و آلودگی زیست‌محیطی در بخش نفت با تاکید بر نوسانات قیمت آن (مطالعه موردی اقتصاد ایران)

Crude oil accounts for the lion’s share of the demand for fossil fuels. Within the past few decades, increased oil consumption in a variety of economic sectors has lead to massive release of toxic pollutants and greenhouse gases, most specially Carbon Dioxide, as well as inflicting damages to the Earth like global warming and climate change. Accordingly, it is imperative to explore the relation...

A New Economic Dimension to the Environmental Kuznets Curve: Estimation of Environmental Efficiency in Case of Pakistan

This study attempts to examine the linkage between environmental degradation and economic growth in Pakistan over the period 1972-2011. The main concern of this study is to test the validity of Environmental Kuznets Curve in case of Pakistan and aims to find out the total and per capita carbon efficiency of Pakistan. Moreover, this study estimates the tipping point of environmental Kuznets curv...

Analysis of Causality between Economic Growth and Carbon Emissions: The Case of Mexico 1971-2011

This paper analyzes the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis to test the causality relationship between economic activity, trade openness and carbon dioxide emissions in Mexico (1971-2011). The results achieved in this research show that there are three long-run relationships between production, trade openness, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The EKC hypothesis was not ...

Climbing the electricity ladder generates carbon Kuznets curve downturns

This paper examines why some countries have experienced environmental Kuznets curve (EKC)-type reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, while others have not. The hypothesis that climbing to the upper rungs of the electricity ladder (nuclear power and modern renewables) has been the primary mechanism via which countries have achieved substantial reductions in per capita CO2 emissions is te...

Corruption and the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Developed and Developing Countries

This study examines the relationship between per capita income and per capita dioxide emissions in the form of a new definition of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, to investigate how corruption influences the income level at the turning point of the relationship between per capita dioxide emissions and income, in developed and developing countries the period 1994-2013 through the use of a panel...
